It is believed, the Finches came from Viking Stock and dwelled in Normandy. The Normans (adapted from the name "Northmen" or "Norsemen") were a people who colonized Normandy, conquered most of England, and played a major political, military and cultural role in the northern and Mediterranean parts of medieval Europe for centuries. Their most famous achievement was the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.

Originally they derived from the indigenous populations of eastern Brittany and western Flanders, including their Viking lords from Scandinavia. They began to occupy the The Norman warrior class was new and different from the old French aristocracy, many of whom could trace their families back to Carolingian times, while the Normans could seldom cite ancestors before the beginning of the 11th century. Most knights remained poor and land-hungry; by 1066, Normandy had been exporting fighting horsemen for more than a generationnorthern area of France now known as Normandy in the latter half of the 9th century

In 1066, the most famous Norman leader, Duke William II of Normandy, conquered England. The invading Normans and their descendants replaced the Anglo-Saxons as the ruling class of England. After an initial period of resentment and rebellion, the two populations largely intermarried and merged, combining languages and traditions. Normans began to identify themselves as Anglo-Norman. Eventually, even this distinction largely disappeared in the course of the Hundred Years war, with the Anglo-Norman aristocracy increasingly identifying themselves as English. The Anglo-Norman language was considerably distinct from the French language; this was the subject of some humor by Geoffrey Chaucer. The Anglo-Norman and Anglo-Saxon languages eventually merged to form Middle English.

William of Normandy (French: Guillaume de Normandie; c. 1028 — 9 September 1087) ruled as the Duke of Normandy from 1035 to 1087 and as King of England from 1066 to 1087. William invaded England, won a victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, and suppressed subsequent English revolts in what has become known as the Norman Conquest. No authentic portrait of William has been found but he was described as a muscular man, strong in every sense of the word, balding in front, and of regal dignity.

In the present nomenclature, William was Duke of Normandy as William II and King of England as William I. He is also known as William the Conqueror.

She married William Finch November 17, 1809 in Caldwwell County, Kentucky, where she had concent from her father. She moved to Texas following the death of her Husband William Billy in 1860 after the 1960 census. At least two of her sons had already moved to Texas.

Rober moved toRed River Co. while John had moved to Lamar County. Polly died between 1867 and 1870 in eather Red River Co. or Lamar Co. Records indicate that her death was 1861 at Red River Co.

My daddy belonged to the Primitive Baptist Church ever since I could remember but my mother loved the Church and cooked big dinners to carry to the church but never felt worthy to join. She was a strong believer in the doctrine.

I guess she knitted more socks and stockings than any other women in the whole country. She knitted all our wool stockings and socks that we wore to school and my daddy wore them winter and summer. He wore them to communion services They sheared the sheep, picked the burrs Out of the wool, washed the wool. Peachie and I would get up on the top of Pa's work shop and spread the wool up there in the sun to dry and when it dried we would get it down and Mother would card it into rolls and then spin it into thread on broaches on the spindle on her wheel. Then she would make balls of it and she was ready to knit white socks. When she wanted to make colored ones she would run it on a reel , a small wheel, and make hanks of thread and make up a dye out of walnut hulls or hickory or cherry bark. They all made a good dye that wouldn't fade. She would dye her thread in a big wash pot and dry it and have pretty thread for colored socks and stockings. Peachy and I would have a new pair to hang up for Santa and would get an apple and orange and a big stick of candy. We thought old Santa was a real good old fellow. HA Just what would children think about that today?

There is no telling how many hundreds of yards of cloth she wove and I'm sure they got to making different colors of dye in her later years. She could weave as pretty cloth as you've ever seen--checks, stripes, and so on. I've never seen any prettier bed spreads than she could weave. She had drafts on paper with figures on them that she would go by to pull her threads through the sleigh and that determined the kind of cloth she would make. She made a coverlet that was called " The Cat rack" and believe me that was a pretty thing. It looked like a big cat had walked all over it in pretty colors. It was a beauty. I don't guess there was anybody in those days that could beat her making cloth. We wore dresses to school that she made and they were real pretty too. I remember some we wore that were small black and red checks. I remember a special pair of stockings that she knit for me that were white with green stripes around them. We had to walk to Little Brown school from our home place but we were clad in warm clothes and didn't get too cold.

The winters were a lot worse than they are now because we would have snows deep enough that,they would stay on the ground for weeks. The ground would freeze four or five feet deep. They would have a hard time digging graves.

They had a big flock of geese and would pick them twice a year and make every child a big feather bed because they thought that every one of us had to have a big feather bed. They did sleep good and they were warm in the winter with those good old wool blankets that Mother made. Also the spreads were wool.

We had a wonderful mother and father. Mother had sixteen children by two marriages but several died in infancy. She had twins that died between Wister and me.

My father raised sheep and plenty of hogs for our meat and had Mules and horses, mares and raised colts. The older girls had a horse they claimed would help plow in the fields and then would ride them on weekends. He made big crops and always raised a big crop of both kinds of potatoes, raised sorghum for our sweets and also big watermelons and muskmelons, beans and peas in the field. I forgot to tell you about Mother's big garden of vegetables. She doted on her garden. She had as fine gardens as anyone with all her other work. of course, we children helped all we could.

My daddy was Justice of the Peace for sixteen years. He also pulled lots of teeth for people. He got a real nice set of instruments to pull teeth. People would come far and near to have teeth pulled. of course, they didn't have anything to deaden them with so a lot would holler and our mother couldn't stand to hear them. She would head to the back where she wouldn't hear them. He didn't charge for pulling teeth but now and then people would give him a dollar or two. While daddy was Justice of the Peace, Jim Cunningham was his bailiff!

My daddy kept Grandma Peachie until she died. Peachie was named for her. We were not very large when she died. She was a fine person and my daddy gave her a home as long as she lived.

footnote: After Aunt Mary died, her daughter, Jewel, who lived in Jackson, MS, came to visit my mother, Bessie Brackeen, who was living with my family in Taylor Lake Village,TX. She brought Mary Elizabeth's thimble and gave it to me. Aunt Mary had always said that she wanted me to have it "after she was through with it". I value it and considered it a real honor. My grandmother, Alma Canzada, gave me her mother's dough bowl (large) and a small iron pot and tripod that was probably used to cook outside. They also have a place of honor in my home. Will first say George Washington Finch, my father, joined the confederate army at the age of 16 and served,' until the war ended and the high up officers just turned the solders all to get home the best way they could. That was to walk so George started North as they were down about middle ways of Mississippi. He came to a town and a railroad and there was a train and it had some boxcars of cows. He climbed in one with the cows and got up in the feed trough. The train pulled out North so when they came to a town he would get down like he was tending to the cows so he was able to travel a long distance that way. When it came to the end of the line he go out and started on North but he was rested and felt fine thinking he was much closer to home. He walked all day and that night the moon was shining real brightly so he decided to keep going. After awhile he heard a cow bell so he thought it could be a house. He went to where the cows were and they were out in a open field. He turned back North again and about an hour later he heard someone chopping wood. He went that way and carne to a house. He asked the man if he could stay there the rest of the night. The man told him yes and then went in. They had eaten their supper but the lady fixed him something to eat and got him off to bed real soon. Dad was Postmaster in Red Bay, Alabama. Employed for 44 years. His Postmaster Civil Service commission was one of the first commissions signed by President Harry S. Truman. His commission was flown to Warm Springs, GA to be signed by President Franklin D Roosevelt, but FDR died bedsore dad's commission, thus it was signed by President Truman.

Dad received commendation from all branches of the armed services for his endeavor in "War Bond Campaigns), and enlistments. Dad served in the Hospital Corps of the U.S. Navy from 1923-1927. He was discharged as a PhMate 2nd Class, Petty officer 2nd Class. Our naval careers paralleled each other in that we both served in the Hospital Corps of the Navy, both were Petty Officers 2nd Class when discharged. We each attained 5 ranks in our four years service.

Dad served as president of every civic club in town, the PTA, the State Grand Masonic Lodge, The Postmaster Convention, scoutmaster, and every office in his church but Pastor and President of the Methodist Women'a organization. He officiated at several funerals of leading citizens of our town.

Dad was a good family man, a great father, and a Christian and a patiotic citizen. He served his God, his country, and his family.

St. Albans Naval Hospital, Long Island, New York, Operating Room Tech. scrubbed cases, picked instruments, prepared surgical packs, assisted surgeons.

Field Medical Technician School -Camp Pendleton, California in preparation for service with the United States Marine Corps who are members of the Navy Department and Service. I attended he Cold Weather Survival and Mountain Warfare School at Pickled Meadows, California in the High Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Set sail for either Japan or Korea. We did not know which until we arrived at Kobe, Japan. From Kobe we traveled to MT. Fujiyama and Middle Camp Fuji and joined the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Regiment, Regimental Headquarters and Service Company. Our job was running the Sickbay and C Medical Company. During the fall of 1955 I served as the trainer of the 3rd Marine Fuji Football team. We travelled all over the far east playing football.

In March 1956, I returned to the United States Naval Station at Treasure Island, California, was separated from the navy and returned home and was off to the University of Mississippi to study medicine and become a doctor.

Funny how God works, I became a minister in the United Methodist Church instead and served the church for over forty years.

Margaret was born in Double Springs, Alabama. Lived in Cullman, Alabama, Cherokee, Alabama, and Florence, Alabama. Arthur and Margaret met in the winter of 1951 while students at Florence State Teacher's College. Margaret's major was Home Ec., later changed to Early Childhood. She completed her degree at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) and Samford.

Margaret directed a Child Development and Day Care Center at Eleventh Ave. UMC in Birmingham where she served first as an aide, then teacher, then director. 1977 -85 She worked with the Jefferson County Board of Education setting up child care programs in various high schools in Jefferson County Alabama.

Margaret worked as an IBM tech. at Ideal toy Manufacturing Company 1953-54 in Jamaica Long Island, New York.

She also worked for the Probate Judge of Lauderdale County in Florence.

Her favorite job was at Catherine's. She never brought home a check, but she brought home hangers of beautiful clothing every payday. Her job there was more of a hobby!
