Hummers, Blue Birds, and other birds: We love birds! Each month we put out 50 pounds of sunflower seed in our four feeders; sometimes, they let us know they want more!. Margaret prepares a gallon of her special hummingbird num num each week. We have experiences with our fine feathered friends that some will have difficulty believing, but it is all true! We have eight generations of Hummers and Blue Birds that inhabit our little world at 535 Love Circle. We have a 5 foot chain link fence to keep cats out! Of course, with 4 dogs, it would be suicide for a cat to come on the premises!

We have 4 hummer feeding stations (make that filling stations)! We have had in excess of 60 of the little buggers at one time entertaining us with their aerial acrobats. It is nothing uncommon for them to buzz around our heads like a swarm of gnats, fly through our crossed legs, fuss at us when the feeder needs a refills. Before Margaret's last stroke, they would buzz her while sweeping the drive way to let her know they were hungry and the feeders needed refilling. I have had hummers light on the rim of my coffee cup as I sat on the deck. One in particular would light on my fore-finger, but alas, never on my bird finger!

One morning as I sat on the deck having coffee before Margaret awakened and the sun was beginning to shed its golden light through the trees, the hummers began massing and there were so many with the low sun glinting off their wings made them appear as a swarm of locus! It was a display of many, of our little hummer friends showing their gratitude for our love and attention.

We also have numbers of Blue Birds that make their home with us. I made and attached eight Blue Bird houses to the fence posts surrounding our property. I built three more---but three granddaughters (and their parents) came for a visit and took them home to begin a sanctuary in their back yard. I guess this old Eagle Scout still remembers his Bird Merit badge (and 21 others) and lessons in conservation.
You will also notice  the wood pecker or pecker wood hanging from one of the feeders. We also have Flickas, Tufted Titmice, Chickadees, Sparrows, Wrens, Blue Jays. Owls, Black Birds, Mourning Doves, Crows, as well as blue, purple, yellow and green Finches, To me the beautiful sight is to see the Blue Birds parched along the ridge of my shop. The side view of a Blue Bird reminds me of a hunched over old man, Hey, Cuz'in Bill out there in Sterling, Colorado, do you know any hunched over old men?  Cheers!
